External Hard Drives are designed to be plugged from outside the computer. They are kept on the side of the computer and plugged through a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable or a fire wire interface cable. Some hard drives are called Internal Hard Drives as they are installed inside the computer which is a lot of hassle. External hard drives can be used either as a Desktop drive or a Portable drive. Portable drives are designed smaller than the Desktop drives in size as they are designed to be carried around. Hard drive storage space capacity, is expressed in three measures Mega Byte (MB), Giga Byte (GB) and Tera Bytes (TB). A Megabyte is the measure of 1 million bytes, a Gigabyte is the measure of 1 billion bytes and a Terabyte is the measure of 1 trillion bytes. In short 1024MB is equal to 1GB and 1024GB is equal to 1TB.
The external hard drives come in black colour fitted with a blue LED light which soothingly lights the desk. The drives come with their company’s stamp and logo on one side with a glossy body finish. A power switch is given on the back, a power socket and a USB port. A RAID switch is also provided that allows the option to select Safe mode or Big mode. The Big mode is RAID 0, which makes the drives appear as a single drive. The Safe mode is RAID 1, which divides the 2TB available storage into two halves and copies the data to both parts of the drive if one fails.
On the front of the external hard drive is a USB expansion slot provided to allow for more storage option. It functions as a general USB port for the computer. There is a 4GB Fat32 partition on Windows with software that formats it to specifications of the computer. Generally on Windows NTFS partition is recommended, on which the installers for a 30 day trial of Mac Drive are placed, adobe reader and Genie Backup Assistant are also installed. The drive comes with free backup online for one year with unlimited storage capacity.
The external hard drives come in elegant designs generally in a book-like shape that take less space on desk and allow two or more such book drives to position neatly together just like volumes of books are kept on a shelf.
