The portability also comes in handy when you need to bring some of your work home with you, simply connect the hard drive to your work computer, transfer the information you need to the hard drive, and then take it home and reconnect it to your home computer.
Laptops are also becoming increasingly more popular, so a portable external hard drive would make sense if you have a portable computer. This way you can take your entire computer and hard drive with you wherever you go, whether it is on an airplane, a cruise ship or simply to a business meeting. Portable external hard drives can be bought that have security features such as being password-protected or boasting fingerprint recognition, meaning the owner has to scan his fingerprint before access to the hard drive will be allowed.
External hard drives are important whether they are portable or not, you should always keep a back-up for all of your important documents, information and programs in case your actual computer becomes compromised and you lose everything. A portable external hard drive just makes everything much more convenient because it can go with you, plus smaller is better when you look at all the new technology that is coming out. Portable hard drives can be bought off of the Internet, local computer stores or major box companies such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
